Breaking barriers

Responding to human right rights challenges, women and girls are facing in Malawi in relation to Sexual and Reproductive Health and Rights, Malawi Human Rights Resource Centre and three other local organizations are jointly implementing a social advocacy project called Breaking the Barriers.

This partnership agreement is for the joint implementation of an advocacy campaign to strengthen abortion rights and access in Malawi by a consortium comprising the Malawi Human Rights Resource Centre (MHRRC), the Centre for Human Rights and Rehabilitation (CHRR), the Centre for Solutions Journalism (CSJ) and the Malawi Sexual and Reproductive Health and Rights (SRHR) Alliance.

Breaking the Barriers project is being funded by Amplify Change, an independent, not-for-profit organization that supports civil society organizations (CSOs) which advocate for improved sexual and reproductive health and rights (SRHR). Amplify Change has a bold ambition –to be a global leader in building stronger and more inclusive movements for SRHR, by effectively supporting those who are best placed to lead change and amplifying their voices.

Activities under the BB project were supposed to commence around April 2023 but due to logistical issues, implementation of activities started around August. Regardless of the delay encountered in rolling out this project, partners have so far made tremendous progress in implementation of activities for period one of year one. It is envisaged that most activities will be done by the end of September.

MHRRC is very grateful to Amplify Change and local partners for the support and cooperation that has been seen so far.

The consortium is committed to raising awareness of SRHR as human rights!
